Welcome

The objective of this blog is to provide readers a forum for their opinions regarding where to eat in Costa Rica. The blog will be blunt, to the point, honest, and hopefully fair.

The result is to find restaurants where you can enjoy the food and environment without regard to being trendy, touristy, or "local".

In the process some restaurants may feel they were unjustly (or justly) reviewed. Make the point in responding and updates may be reflected in updated reveiws.

Enjoy and eat your heart out.

Time Out Restaurant – Sports Bar and Restaurant in Escazu

If your looking for a sports bar environment, one of the best, with excellent food and beers including Costa Rican home brews then you will definitely not go wrong.

Located in Escazu.  Traveling from the new Walmart (former Hipermas) towards Paco turn left after passing the apart hotel Villas del Rio.  You will pass the Costa Rica Country Club on the right.  Continue up the hill approximately 300 meters (south) on the left side located next to a two level terracotta painted building.

GPS Coordinates – (if you know, post a comment with the coordinates)
Telephone - +(506) 2588-2622
Schedule – Open every day for lunch until late night.

Service – Prompt and attentive.  Once the owners get to know you they will almost always personally welcome you.  Someone is always available who can speak English although there really isn’t a need because the Menu is really clear, specials are all posted on wall boards (in English).

Food –We have never had anything bad.  Everything chosen has been excellent.  Great portions and great flavors.  Giant sandwiches, extreme salads of all kinds, the best hamburgers in Escazu, and generally overall excellent.  One of my favorite lunch sandwiches is the “Rocky Marciano”.  A chicken, parmed on a Kaiser roll with an exceptional red sauce made to perfection.  Pizza is also served although not my favorite in Costa Rica (a good pizza restaurant will be reviewed in the future).  The home made soups, particularly the New England Clam Chowder is as authentic as it comes.  Excellent.

Portions are big so come prepared to eat or take what you can’t home in a to-go box.

The beer selection is wide and some of Costa Rica’s own “home brewed” beers are served.  I highly recommend the Lager.

Price -  Reasonable, not cheap not expensive.  The food is so good and the portions excellent makes the value worth every colone spent.

The restaurant only accepts cash so be prepared.  Two people can have a couple of beers and sandwiches for under C20,000.

Ambiance – It’s a sports bar so don’t go expecting anything else.  However, as a sports bar I’ve not seen any other place with as many flat panel TV’s.  I’m guessing but there must be at least 17 TV’s completing surrounding the place.  There is no position where you will not see a TV without obstruction.  In fact, if you have a favorite team playing and are wondering where to watch a game then this is the place.  If you ask the owner to change the channel for your favorite game they will gladly accommodate you.  I’ve wanted to watch Florida State University and they didn’t hesitate to change the television I was watching.

This is not a place for kids but if I had young kids I would take them just so I could have a good lunch or dinner and then get out for the kids sake.  The smoke, drinking environment, etc. is probably not the best place for young ones.

The place is “open air” but as a bar the ventilation is good and although smoking is permitted it should bother you and if necessary you can sit near an open window.

There are tables towards the back of the restaurant, booths in a small mezzanine area, a very large, full size bar, and a few high tables seating two.

Parking can be a little challenging but generally space can be found around one of the corners.  If a big game is playing expect to walk a very, very short distance.

General – A great place as a sports bar, a great place for good food, and a great place for friendly people.

Final Note – Try it, I think you’ll come back.
