Welcome

The objective of this blog is to provide readers a forum for their opinions regarding where to eat in Costa Rica. The blog will be blunt, to the point, honest, and hopefully fair.

The result is to find restaurants where you can enjoy the food and environment without regard to being trendy, touristy, or "local".

In the process some restaurants may feel they were unjustly (or justly) reviewed. Make the point in responding and updates may be reflected in updated reveiws.

Nikklas - Gyros and Hummus - South Sabana - San Jose – Greek

We have been coming to Nikklas’s restaurant since it opened and will continue to come.  The lamb wraps are excellent, the vege burger uniquely tasty and the hummus is the best for a restaurant in Costa Rica.  If your looking for a good Sunday afternoon Greek fix this is the place.
Located in South Sabana.  If coming from Escazu use the Annonas road going towards Sabana.  Just as you approach Sabana after passing Pops you will  pass by a tall blue and white tower condominium named “Sabana Real”.  On the same corner as the condo you will find the restaurant.  Sabana South, 100mts west of Fitsimons Gym.

Web:  http://nikklas.com/
GPS Coordinates – (if you know, post a comment with the coordinates)
Telephone - +(506) 2220-0591
Schedule – 7 days – 11:00am to 9:00pm
Service – Prompt and attentive.  Menu in English or Spainish.

Food – This is as close as I’ve found (including the beach areas) to the way a Greek gyro should be made.  All the recipes are made with classic Greek ingredients, Pork leg, purple onion, tomatoes and Tzatziki sauce (yogurt based sauce with garlic, olive oil and spices).  The Gyros are oversized and full of mouth watering ingredients.  Sometimes there may be a little too many purple onions for my taste but the restaurant staff will gladly reduce or remove any items you may not want on your Gyro.  The chicken Gyro is good but sometimes the meat may be a little dry.  All the salads are excellent.

Price -  fair and reasonable.  Two people – routine order – C 11,000 or approximately $22.00 (U.S.).   In the most recent order this included a “Eddy Veggy” burger combo with a very generous portion of hummus and a coke for C4,500 ($9.00); lamb (cordero-res) wrap also with a generous portion of hummus in place of the standard “french fried” potatoes and an Iced Tea for C6,500 ($13.00).

There is no doubt this place has the best hummus at a fair price in Costa Rica.

Ambiance – This is not a formal restaurant in the since of having waiters/waitresses and table cloth covered tables with fine .  You order and pay at the counter and your food is brought to you promptly.  The restaurant is always clean, the ambiance comfortable, temperature good, no smells, and overall a relaxing environment to have lunch or dinner.  The table area is surrounded by glass, parking is immediately adjacent and in front of the place, small flat panel TV’s available for whatever viewing you might want or in case your favorite sporting event may be viewing but you just can’t do without a plate of hummus or a great gyro.

Parking has never been an issue in all the times I’ve visited.  There are probably 8 full parking spaces in front or on the side of the restaurant and no “watchmen” to pay.

General – I will continue visiting this restaurant in the future.  It is a good change from the routine and often times limited options for unique cuisine in the San Jose area at a fair price.

Final NoteKalí óreksi!)
